Delivered for residents

When residents raise a problem, I keep pushing until it's sorted. Here are a few examples.

Safer walkway outside Oak Tree Primary School

Drivers, especially delivery vans, were using a pedestrian walkway on the Oak Tree Estate as a shortcut, right outside Oak Tree Primary School, which many Ling Forest families use.

After residents raised it, residents' champion Nick Marks and I campaigned to get the bollards replaced. They're now back in place, and the walkway is safe for families again.

Violet Hill reopened after sewer collapse

In March 2023 a collapsed sewer opened a large sinkhole on Violet Hill, a key route linking the south of Mansfield with Forest Town and Mansfield Woodhouse. It shut the road northbound and caused traffic chaos.

Severn Trent initially wouldn't accept responsibility, so I stepped in, pressing them to take ownership and repair the sewer as quickly as possible. I kept residents updated throughout, and the road reopened on 1 April.

Supporting local groups

As County Councillor for Mansfield East, I used my divisional fund to back community groups doing great work locally.

£1,000 St Albans Church, Forest Town Supporting the church's community group.
£500 Frenbot Jointly with Cllr Rob Corden. Frenbot's annual celebrity football tournament raises money for local charities.
Grant Men in Sheds, Ransom Wood Jointly with Cllrs Rob Corden and Andre Camilleri. Men in Sheds brings people together for practical projects, friendship and wellbeing.

What I'm working on

My priorities for Ling Forest

Safer streets

Working with Nottinghamshire Police and residents to tackle anti-social behaviour, and pressing for better lighting where people feel unsafe.

Safer school runs

Working with Wynndale Primary, St Patrick's Catholic Primary, parents and residents to ease school-run traffic and parking.

Roads and pavements

Chasing potholes, broken pavements and utility works until they are put right, just as I did on Violet Hill.

Cleaner and greener

Tackling litter and fly-tipping, and protecting the woodland and green spaces that give Ling Forest its name.

Local businesses

Backing Mansfield's market, high street and small firms, which create jobs and keep our town centre alive.

Value for your money

I bring an accountant's eye to the council's budgets. Council tax is your money, and it should be spent as carefully as you would spend it.

About Nigel

Mansfield born and bred

I was born at King's Mill Hospital and have lived in Mansfield all my life.

I went to St Peter's First School, St John's Middle School and The Brunts School, then studied in Nottingham before taking a degree in Accounting at the University of Derby. My mum and dad were both born and bred here too, and they've backed me every step of the way. My dad was still out campaigning with me at 87!

Today I'm a self-employed accountant. That background shapes how I approach the council's finances: every pound of council tax is residents' money, and it should be spent as carefully as your own.

On Mansfield District Council I represent Ling Forest Ward and serve as Leader of the Opposition, holding the council's leadership to account on behalf of residents. I also sit on the Planning Applications Committee, the Audit, Governance & Standards Committee and the Place Scrutiny Committee.

Experience

Alongside my work on Mansfield District Council, from 2021 to 2025 I also served as a County Councillor on Nottinghamshire County Council, including almost two years as Deputy Cabinet Member for Education and SEND.
